How to take photos from a bug’s point of view. Nearer than ever, yet wit good working distance. Below the articles with the content. Most is theory and designs, no photos for now.
Articles written 20 November – 3 December 2020. The main idea appeared about 20 October 2020. Not all pages are polished and a lot of things still to say, but I think it is already a lot of material. Maybe will do some more work in January. Write me for what is not clear or of you have better knowledge or ideas.
Theory I
How near can we get? How sharp will be the subject? How blurry the background? Not rocket science, but I couldn’t find those answer properly collected together. Warning: long and messy.
Amateur stacks
A short overview of three homemade solutions for wide angle macro.
Eyepieces as macro objectives
Telescope eyepieces can be used as objectives; are image telecentric, with wide angle and forward pupil. Apparently, has never been done before.
Theory II: front-aperture lenses and the relay system
DRAFT – The best solution to increase working distance is the front-pupil objective; and they like to be mounted on relay probe assembly.
My stacks
DRAFT – Described photos of some of the working lens assemblies I’ve tried and described in other posts.
Probe lenses
A short overview of available photographic relay systems.
Wide angle macro lenses
A short overview of standard wide angle lenses that can do some macro.
The image-aperture swap
Just put the aperture at another place and your inverted macro will become a (moderately) wide angle. Too easy to be true?
Nearer, faster, wider
DRAFT – We all want more magnification! And we can get it, just pick some specific objects already in your home and stack them with specific spacings.
The bug’s perspective
DRAFT – Where all this micro fisheye project started: how to get into the bug’s point of view. Seriously.
Crowdfunding for a dedicated wide macro
DRAFT – Enough with DIY. How many people will be interested in a wide angle macro, with long working distance, near & fast, with autofocus and reasonable price? I believe it is feasible; about minimum 1000 preorders to industrialize it. I am unable to finish any project, so need some help.
Beyond infinity magnification
With forward-pupil objectives we can easily take Pericentric images; the antithesis of wide angle.
